Baglama, beyond its function as an instrument, is an object which has the privilege or misfortune of occupying center stage in the minds of an array of cultures through the most complex web of meanings and definitions: it is used as a signifier for love, for tradition, for women (be it mostly from a male-centric perspective), for a certain geography, for a certain bundle of mainly eastern attitudes and of course, the most direct and general of significations, for music and artmaking. 

 

Here, myself and my collaborator Cem Altınöz, while continuing our research on the concept of ‘symbolic actions’, have found ourselves witnessing the formation of a novel ritual: 

ceremonially burning down a baglama. We offer you the peculiar enjoyment that may come from witnessing that experience, and all at once draw direct lines to all those different meanings the baglama can take on. In the end, in one simple act of destruction, we hope to bring forth in solid form, the actual state of degradation those aforementioned concepts are currently in. 

 

While recognizing there are many elements to find aesthetically intriguing in any decaying state of any object or concept; Decay Time directs a moral and questioning gaze to the viewer through these connections and a discussion on ethics in mind.

Bağlama, enstrüman kimliğinin ötesinde, birçok kültürün hafızasında merkezi bir alan işgal etmenin, kompleks bir anlamlar ağı içinde varolmanın ayrıcalığını veyahut talihsizliğini yaşayan bir obje: Aşk, gelenek, kadın (çoğunlukla erkeğin bakış açısından), coğrafya, doğululuk ve herşeyden öte sanat ve müzik için pek genel bir sembol olarak yaşabilmesi, bu tarihsel ve felsefik gerçeğin kanıtı.

 

Bir işbirliği olarak kendini göstermiş bu projede, sanatçı Cem Altınöz ile birlikte “sembolik aksiyonlar” kullanılarak anlam yaratımı ve özgün ritüellerin oluşumu üzerine araştırmalarımıza devam ederken, takip ettiğimiz düşünsel haritanın bir bağlamanın yakılıp yok edilmesi noktasında seremonyel bir eylem ile sonuçlandığına şahit olduk. Günün sonunda, amacımız bu eylemin getirdiği o garip estetik tatmini sizlere sunmanın yanı sıra, yukarıda bahsi geçen ve bağlamanın direkt bir sembol olarak üstlenebildiği tüm o konseptlerin içine girmiş olduğu talihsiz çürüme ve bozulma halini, aküt, fiziksel ve elle tutulur bir biçimde, tek bir yok etme eylemi ile gözler önüne çıkartmaktır.

 

Herhangi bir objenin veya olgunun çürüme/entropi içinde olmasının estetik değer yaratabileceğinin kabullenilmesi bir kenara, Decay Time, ahlaki/etik bir tartışma bilinciyle, seyirciyi soru soran bir bakış altında tutma gayesindedir.
